Premier Andrew Furey says he would like to see the federal government make more use of 5 Wing Goose Bay in Labrador.
During the recent meeting of Canada’s Premiers in Halifax, Furey was asked about calls from some of his counterparts for the federal government to speed up its response to NATO requirements to spend two per cent of its GDP on defence.
Furey says he supports those calls, noting that they have been “fighting for four years” for Ottawa to utilize the 5 Wing base.
Furey says the feds could move towards their NATO goals by investing more money in 5 Wing, and taking it from warm idle to active. Furey argues that would be an easy way for government to move without having to create new infrastructure projects.
