Dwan Street will be the first female president of one of the most powerful unions in the province.
The results of the election were tallied last night. There was a 32 per cent voter turnout.
Street, an official in the office of the FFAW, says they have made history and that the election is the beginning of a new era.
She, Abe Solberg and Dave Callahan were in the running for the presidency. Dwan Street will be president-elect until November when she will take over from outgoing president Greg Pretty.
When she does take office, Street says there are many issues that she will be tackling, noting that she could go across the entire island and name the problems that members are facing.
She says those issues are not just with harvesters either, it also includes plant workers.
She says the role of president is crucial because she has to have her finger on the pulse of many different issues. Street says it is the best job in Newfoundland because she gets to work with the “lifeblood” of the province.
