Opposition Leader Tony Wakeham admits a recent social media post should not have gone out using quotations to suggest a direct statement from the premier.
The provincial PC Party’s social media presence has been coming under fire in some circles for playing fast and loose with the facts and becoming more sensational.
A recent post on X (formerly Twitter) shows a picture of Premier Andrew Furey along with images of money, soccer players and freezer units with the name Andrew Furey on top and in quotes, “I’ll give money to a UK soccer team but won’t give people a proper burial.” Quotations are used to denote a direct quote.
A subsequent updated post in bright yellow states Facts Matter, and claims; “you can take the quotations out of the graphic but the facts remain the same.”
Wakeham admitted to Russel Bowers on the Tim Powers Show on VOCM that the quotations should never have been there.
“That tweet should not have gone out with quotations around it,” says Wakeham. “What we should be referencing is facts, and the fact of the matter was they turned around and gave $171,000 to a tier 4 soccer team in the United Kingdom.”
