It’ll be a busy weekend on baseball diamonds across the province.
Tomorrow marks Baseball NL Day, a time set aside to drum up greater interest in the sport.
The executive director of Baseball NL, Ryan Garland, says their minor committee came up with the idea a few years ago. The model is similar in concept to Hockey Day in Canada.
Garland says baseball, which has been around for decades in Newfoundland and Labrador, continues to grow.
“Our numbers haven’t stopped growing, which is nice to see,” he said.
Numerous events are planned throughout the province including senior A finals at St. Pat’s Ball Park in St. John’s, the Bulldogs Classic in Conception By North, a U-9 Jamboree in C.B.S., the Matt & Megan Invitational Tournament in Gander, the Honda Hickman girls invitational tournament in Grand Falls-Windsor, a U-13 provincial team training camp in Corner Brook and Challenger Baseball in St. John’s.
Game 1 of the 2024 Molson Coors Senior A best-of-three final between the St. John’s Caps and Corner Brook Barons is set for 7:30 tonight at St. Pat’s, with games two and three on Saturday. Games four and five, if necessary, are scheduled for Sunday.
Corner Brook also plays host this weekend to the 2024 Sportscraft U-18 qualifier involving the Barons, Caps, Mount Pearl Blazers and Paradise Phantoms. The winning team will represent the province at the Baseball Atlantic U-18 championships on the Labour Day weekend.
Complete schedules are available on the Baseball NL website.
