The president-elect of the FFAW is pointing to her family’s history in the fishery as helping to prepare her for taking on the new role.
Dwan Street was declared the winner early Thursday morning, and will officially take over the role in November.
Street notes her mother was a plant worker, her father a harvester, and her extended family was involved in the industry, too.
A former harvester and plant worker in her own right, she says that family involvement exposed her to the fishery from all angles growing up.
What hits home for Street is that a lot of the issues she heard about in her youth are still happening today.
“That’s a significant problem. I think we really need to sit down and ask ourselves why that is, and why we’re still facing down the same challenges.”
