Those who are expecting in rural areas of eastern Newfoundland will now have the option to receive support from a midwife.
A new midwifery program based out of Carbonear officially launched this week, offering various services like prenatal and postpartum care and other reproductive health services.
Midwifery implementation coordinator with NL Health Services, Sarah Donnelly Harnum says the program has been a success in other areas of the province and has contributed to improving aspects of health care.
NL Health Services looks forward to offering midwifery services in Carbonear (Eastern-Rural Zone), beginning today, August 5, 2024.

Donnelly Harnum says availing of a midwife allows someone to have support throughout their entire pregnancy.
A midwife can provide education throughout a pregnancy, and will also be there to help out 24/7, even in the weeks after a child is born.
Those considered to be a low-risk pregnancy can self refer themselves to the midwifery program.
