The application process for the housing grant program in St. John’s opened only yesterday, but there is interest as several homeowners have accessed the forms.
The capital city has been changing rules and regulations to encourage new builds in an effort to address the housing crunch. A person who owns and occupies a house can qualify for up to $20,000 to add a subsidiary dwelling on the property.
Councillor Ron Ellsworth says the program also encourages the construction of multi-plex units where zoning restrictions would normally get in the way.
For four units or more, developers can apply for financial relief up to a maximum of $100,000.
Councillor Ellsworth says there will be an open house on the program at the farmers’ market.
No registration is required for the session which takes place next Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
