A 25-year-old Newfoundland man has died after falling while hiking in the Canadian Rockies.
Alberta RCMP confirm the body of Zachary Coates, originally from CBS, was found after he was reported overdue Sunday on Mount Smuts in the area of Kananaskis, near Banff National Park.
Kananaskis Emergency Services and Calgary Police were involved in search and rescue operation which led to the discovery of Coates’ body on Monday.
Police say it appears he fell to his death while “scrambling” up a section of the mountain.
Scrambling is a technique reserved for rocky, steep, and rough terrain, using mostly hands and feet to ascend but without a harness.
Police extended condolences to the man’s family, friends, and employer, Cenovus Energy.
