Dozens of kites peppered the sky above Wishingwell Park in St. John’s yesterday for a celebration of Afghan kites.
Kite-flying is a much-loved and long-standing Afghan cultural tradition, but has come to symbolize much more than recreation and creativity in recent years.
One of the organizers of the event, Leeda Ahadi, says flying kites has become a symbol of freedom since the Taliban banned it in Afghanistan.
“When you see the kite flying, then you feel like, ‘oh my goodness, I can do everything I want.’ ”
