Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has severed the supply and confidence agreement with the federal Liberals.
The deal between the parties helped to keep the minority Liberal government afloat with NDP support in exchange for policies and programs more in-line with NDP values.
Singh took to social media this afternoon to announce that the deal is done.
“Today, I notified the Prime Minister that I have ripped up the Supply and Confidence Agreement.”
Then, in an election-style statement, Singh went on to say that Canadians are fighting a battle for the “future of the middle class” accusing the Liberals of letting Canadians down and caving to “corporate greed.”
Singh has said that the federal government crossed a line when it imposed binding arbitration to end the work stoppage affecting the country’s major railroads.
Speaking with reporters in Rocky Harbour, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the NDP have a choice to make.
He says every politician has the choice between playing politics and serving Canadians. He hopes the NDP stays focused on their “fundamental values” and avoid what he calls the “damage” that would be done by the Conservatives.
On the topic of a potential election, however, Trudeau says he’s “not focused on politics,” and that he wants to deliver on things Canadians need.
“An election will come in the coming year, hopefully not until next fall, because in the meantime we’re going to deliver for Canadians.”
