The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor claims to be making progress in reducing what it calls dangerous and “nuisance-driving behaviour” involving off-road vehicles.
The town council issued a statement saying recent efforts on the part of RCMP and municipal enforcement officers resulted in vehicle inspections, confiscations and penalties for reckless driving throughout the community.
Mayor Barry Manuel says a cross-section of youth, underage drivers and adults are responsible.
But he also notes the public has a role to play in helping address the issue by reporting dangerous or reckless driving by operators of ATVs and dirt bikes.
Off-roading advocate Rick Noseworthy welcomes all efforts to nab people who disobey the law, but he insists the vast majority of users act responsibly.
The town is urging the public to report any illegal activity to RCMP or the town’s municipal enforcement division at 709-489-0411.
“It is not a time for complacency,” says the statement from the town.
“Together as a community we share these serious concerns, and together as a community we can confront them assertively.”
