A public hearing into the loss of the Titan submersible and its five passengers is set to begin in South Carolina today.
OceanGate’s Titan submersible lost contact one hour and 47 minutes into its descent to the Titanic wreck site on June 18, 2023.
The disappearance triggered a massive search off the coast of Newfoundland, which included efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard and other international entities.
The Titan was said to have enough oxygen onboard to last four days, leaving many around the world captivated as they awaited news of the five on board.
On June 22, officials confirmed that the vessel had been lost in a catastrophic implosion just hours into its journey to the ocean floor.
The U.S. Coast Guard will examine several factors that may have led to the Titan’s fate, including regulatory compliance, crew qualifications, mechanical functions, and the vessel’s previous activities before the incident.
The hearing is expected to last ten days and will be livestreamed via YouTube.
