The long-anticipated opening of the new Mews Centre in St. John’s could finally take place this fall, a full year after its original scheduled opening date.
Construction of the $33-million replacement for the old Mews Centre began in the spring of 2022, and was expected to be completed by the fall of 2023, but that was delayed numerous times by a series of issues.
The city says the contractor is now completing interior work, such as tiling and other equipment for the pool area, among other things.
“We are waiting on the arrival of the glass for the sport courts and final sanding and painting of the gymnasium floor. Furniture for part of the administrative area has been installed on site, and we are awaiting the remaining furnishings for the remainder of the building fit-up,” notes an update on the city’s website.
“While we still remain behind schedule due to circumstances beyond our control, the contractor is getting ready to begin the commissioning process in mid-late September. We anticipate that the commissioning process for the building will take approximately one month to complete.”
The city says further information regarding the grand opening will be announced in the coming weeks.
