The Newfoundland Pony Sanctuary on Change Islands lost important revenue this summer, and owner Netta LeDrew blames ferry troubles earlier in the season as the main cause.
The Newfoundland Pony Sanctuary is home to the endangered registered heritage breed.
LeDrew said visitor numbers were down significantly this summer from the previous year, and that means donations to keep the sanctuary running were down as well.
“We operate with the donations, and we got fundraising and we do pony rides, and it was like when the people wasn’t there, the money wasn’t there,” she told VOCM.
She said visitors were frustrated with long line-ups when the Veteran was delayed in returning to service earlier this year, leaving the much smaller Astron to service Change Islands and Fogo Island.
