A local film picked up some big awards at the Atlantic International Film Festival in Halifax.
Actor Sean Dalton calls ‘Skeet’ a redemption story. It follows a man, Billy Skinner who is trying to make a fresh start after being released from prison and forms an unlikely companionship with a refugee who is escaping the horrors in his home country.
Nigel Markham just won Best Atlantic Cinematographer for his work in the film and Dalton won the award for best Outstanding Performance.
Director Nik Sexton says they wanted to make a “cool, neo-noire film” and went to a number of low-income neighbourhoods in the capital city, but what they found, surprised them.
“And we went to these low-income neighbourhoods, that we used (to) be kind of fearful of…and we noticed that they had changed. We noticed that they were now filled with refugees….and we saw a much more interesting story.”
Skeet is still on the film festival circuit, with the goal of making it into Cineplex theatres, and then on streaming services.
