Despite a recent operational set-back, Choices for Youth is moving forward with expansion plans—with the provincial government’s help.
The organization didn’t get the full amount of federal operational funding it requested—forcing them to make cuts to programming and staff, however it’s partnering with the provincial government on two new provincial integrated youth services hubs.
A request for proposals has been issued with the help of $4.3 million in provincial funding announced today. The two new hubs will be located outside the metro region, but the exact locations have not yet been determined.
Just last month—the group laid off 16 full-time employees and 15 youth trainees, and was unable to fill existing vacancies after failing to finalize a $16-million funding agreement with the federal government.
The provincial funding was earmarked last April—and recent cuts won’t affect the new hubs.
Choices estimates that one in four of the young people who walk through their doors are from outside the capital city—and the need is growing.
The sites will focus on mental health support, food security, housing, primary care, public health and family supports.
The RFP closes in November.
