The parent company of Central Dairies says effective measures have been taken to prevent any further issues related to premature spoilage.
Last week, Agropur issued a voluntary recall of 2% Central Dairies milk and S’milk after countless complaints of black residue inside the cartons, well before the product reached its best before date.
Local plant manager Jerome Whalen says the discolouration is caused by early spoilage, but is not a food-safety concern.
Whalen says they’ve taken measures to correct the issue, which have been successful.
He says the company has added additional cleaning practices at the local plant and outside experts have been called in to assist with correcting the problem.
The company has also put a new protocol in place which involves holding the milk for three days prior to shipping to ensure all test results meet industry standards before the product ends up on store shelves.
Agropur says products with best before dates from October 1 onward have been subject to the enhanced protocols and are not included in the recall.
Those with milk with an expiry date up to and including September 30 can return it to the store for a refund.
