The head coach of the St. John’s Junior Caps is hopeful that St. John’s Sports and Entertainment is able to attract a team from the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League to the Mary Brown’s Centre.
Steve Callahan believes that the QMJHL is the only franchise that will work here.
He says SJPE and Mary Brown’s Centre will do whatever they can to secure an anchor tenant, and when it comes to the Q, “it becomes an opportunistic situation, you obviously have to have a franchise that’s in a position that’s not succeeding…and in order to do so, then the numbers have to correlate that way, and does the move make it feasible?”
“It’s really the only product that’s going to work here,” he explained.
St. John’s lost its professional hockey team last year with the dissolution of the Growlers, leaving them without an anchor hockey tenant.
Mary Browns Centre is filling the gap this year with the junior and senior Caps.
