This will be a special day in Conception Harbour as the town honours its military history and a fallen hero.
Sept. 28th marks the 20th anniversary of the unveiling of the monument remembering Cpl. Jamie Murphy.
Murphy lost his life while on deployment in Afghanistan in January 2004.
To mark the anniversary, the town’s Beautification and Historic Preservation Committee has been making improvements to the monument grounds, with more work still to come.
Committee member Kristopher Orchard says it’s all about honouring Murphy and his family.
“No soldier in battle or combat is ever standing alone, and his monument stands there at the moment by itself and that’s just not right,” he said.
Orchard says the town is working hard to change that.
“So … we will be unveiling the new grounds of landscaping — a large painting with actual accessible ramps, new walkways, lighting, and two new monuments over the next two years honouring right back to World War I and World War II.”
