Employers in Newfoundland and Labrador now have access to a new resource to increase physical activity in the workplace.
Through a partnership with ParticipACTION, the department responsible for recreation is launching the Active at Work Toolkit. It’s designed to equip employers with information to encourage their staff to move more during the workday and establish healthy habits to improve their overall well-being.
Simple steps such as stretching or standing during conference calls, engaging in walking meetings, or encouraging employees to take the stairs instead of the elevator can lead to benefits, says the minister responsible, Fred Hutton.

Jon Malton, director of partnerships with ParticipACTION, notes that the toolkit includes an employee handout, a PowerPoint template, a Climb to Well-Being tool to encourage stair usage, posters, and videos.
Hutton says even five minutes a day of such activity can make a difference, suggesting going for a walk on the lunch break instead of scrolling through the cellphone.
