Organizations that promote safety on the province’s trail systems are concerned with recent vandalism involving signage.
The Newfoundland T’Railway Council, Tourism South West, and the NL Snowmobile Federation say trail signs are “vital,” and when they are damaged it not only creates a safety risk for users, but also diverts funds that could be used for maintenance of the trails.
T’Railway council president Rick Noseworthy says it costs a lot of money to replace such signs, noting they can cost between $300 and $400 each.
He estimates staff have to replace about 20 per cent of the signs every year.
As for what people can do to help, Noseworthy’s message is simple:
“If you see something, say something.”
He says the three organizations have partnered with Crime Stoppers to catch and deter vandals.
