A lawsuit filed by the mother of a young woman who died in custody, is still in the discovery phase more than six years after her passing.
Natasha Martin told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that her daughter Skye, who struggled with her mental health for years, choked to death while in custody at the women’s correctional facility in Clarenville in April of 2018.
Martin says the discovery portion of the case has been very difficult and traumatic.
She says there are pictures and videos, but on the advice of the government and her lawyer, “I have not watched the video yet, but I do know that there was a camera and people watched her force the sandwich down her throat.”
Martin’s daughter Skye was one of two young women who died within weeks of each other while in custody back in 2018, and were among several people who had died in custody in the preceding months.
Martin says she and Lisa Piercey, the mother of Samantha Piercey, are planning on working on a documentary together.
“I just want some answers,” says Martin.
Lisa Piercey meanwhile says they want to know what happened to Samantha and why the process is taking so long.
“It’s still being dragged on, and dragged on,” she told VOCM Open Line.
