The provincial government has awarded a $5.7 million dollar contract to Trident Construction for the erection of a Bailey bridge spanning the Narrows and connecting the two sides of Marystown.
The town was severed in two when the Canning Bridge was closed to traffic after it failed inspection back in February of 2023.
The province committed to the development of such a structure while a new span is being built. It’s hoped that work on a new permanent bridge will be completed by the end of 2026.
The mayor of Marystown says he’s anxious to get things “back to normal.”
The provincial government yesterday announced that a $5.7 million tender had been awarded to Trident Construction for a bailey bridge to link the two sides of Marystown.
Mayor Brian Keating says the news is well received and comes with confirmation that work on a permanent replacement to the Canning Bridge will begin once the temporary Bailey bridge is in place.
The Canning Bridge will remain open to emergency vehicles and foot traffic while the temporary bridge is under construction.
