Daffodil Place in St. John’s is celebrating 15 years in operation.
The 24-room facility, which opened its doors in 2009, gives cancer patients a place to stay when they must travel to St. John’s for treatment.
To mark the milestone, the Canadian Cancer Society is bringing back a service, and rebranding its trademark fundraiser.
First, they’re relaunching their Wheels for Hope program, which is being supported by AstraZeneca. In that program, volunteer drivers help get cancer patients to and from their appointments.
That will be followed by the society’s annual One Night Stand fundraiser Home for the Night, and a 24-hour radiothon to be broadcast on VOCM on November 14.
Over the course of two separate bouts with leukemia, Jennifer Mitchell of Corner Brook has stayed a total of 12 months at Daffodil Place.
She has been cancer-free for three years now but still considers the facility her “home away from home.”
“Daffodil place is like an island in the middle of the ocean. It’s a safe place for you to go while you’re navigating the rough seas.” Mitchell says that is what the facility means to her and her husband, who stayed with her during her cancer journey.
