Transportation Minister Fred Hutton is delivering a “shout out” to the captain and crew of the Flanders after experiencing first-hand some particularly rough conditions on the Tickle earlier this week.
Hutton joined the crew on the bridge as the ferry criss-crossed its way across the choppy waters between Bell Island and Portugal Cove Wednesday evening.
While he wasn’t on board at the time, he is aware of damage caused to a number of vehicles on the ferry earlier that same day.
“Again the sea state was a little bit challenging at that point in time,” although not enough to cancel the crossing. “As a result,” says Hutton, eight of the “11 or 12 vehicles” on the ferry at the time sustained damage.
No injuries were reported. Hutton says owners are now in the process of contacting their insurance companies which will, in turn, contact government as part of the claims process.
