The chief medical officer of health says the province is still grappling with a whooping cough outbreak which now includes 263 cases across the province.
The province reported a spike in cases last month as NL Health Services has been looking to catch up on vaccines for school-aged children.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says the prolonged outbreak is normal for whooping cough—also known as pertussis.
“Pertussis outbreaks are generally a little longer lived than a lot of other outbreaks that we may have. But it’s still ongoing; we’re still seeing cases. I think the peak was a few months ago, but we’re certainly still seeing cases,” she said.
