The Mayor of Conception Bay South is concerned with the amount of radon detected in area homes.
Radon is a colourless and odourless naturally-occurring gas resulting from a breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. According to Health Canada it is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
Darrin Bent says a recent study found nearly one in three homes tested in their sample had higher than acceptable levels of radon.
Bent encourages residents to buy a test kit.
“110 homes were tested and 30 per cent of them were above the Health Canada level for radon gas in the home. And one of the things about radon is you may not have it. Your neighbour may, the next house may not, the next house may. There’s no rhyme or reason for that. So, if you hear somebody say, ‘oh no, I’m good, I’m next door, you’re probably good. You don’t know unless you get tested,'” he says.
