The Premier and MHA for the region says he’s thankful that everyone one is safe and accounted for following the loss of the iconic Driftwood Inn in Deer Lake.
Flames destroyed the building yesterday in a fire that broke out around 7:00 a.m. The iconic landmark was destroyed despite the efforts of firefighters who were still on the scene last evening.
Premier Andrew Furey commended the many acts of bravery that he says helped to save lives.
“Hearing some of the stories about children who were there on a volleyball tournament for example, having to be evacuated, and people banging on doors to make sure that everybody knew that they had to leave the premises.” He calls that, and the firefighters who came from far and wide to knock down the blaze, a testament to the kinds of acts of heroism shown during the emergency.
At least three young men were displaced by yesterday’s fire at the Driftwood Inn in Deer Lake.
Councillor Amanda Freake took to Facebook last night to thank those who have been helping the young men who are from India and have no family in the community.
She says Robyn Courtney and a team of helpers took the young men to Shoppers Drug Mart and the local thrift store to gather together personal items.
She’s made a plea for clothing donations to help fit out the young men – who have lost everything including laptops and passports – in addition to finding them places to stay.
