The Premier and MHA for the Deer Lake region is pledging government’s support for those affected by the fire that destroyed the Driftwood Inn on the weekend.
The fire broke out around 7:00 a.m. Saturday and despite the intensity of the blaze, everyone staying and working at the business was safe and accounted for.
Premier Andrew Furey says he’s moved by the stories of heroism that he says clearly made a difference.
He commended the heroic actions of those who went through the building, where student athletes competing in a volleyball tournament were staying, banging on doors to rouse people and make sure they got out.
Also displaced were three young men from India who were being housed in the hotel. They lost everything from their clothing to laptops and passports. A group of local residents helped the men get the toiletries they needed and clothing donations are also being accepted. The next challenge is finding them a place to stay. The premier is vowing that help will be provided.
“I’ve reached out to the council in Deer Lake to let them know that whatever they need, the province will be there to help. And if there were people there who were using that as a temporary-permanent home, then we will endeavor to find solutions for them.”
