At the height of Saturday’s fire at the Driftwood Inn in Deer Lake five pumper trucks were working on knocking down the blaze with the local water system working at capacity.
Fire Chief Steven Rowsell says the Deer Lake Fire Department received help from Pasadena, Cormack and Reidville, which sent pumper trucks and extra resources to the scene.
The city of Corner Brook also offered its assistance, but in the end it wasn’t needed.
Rowsell says one of the challenges faced by firefighters was the building’s metal roof that prevented them from ventilating the fire.
“It was unsafe to put any members on the roof to cut holes” because of the size of the building and the intensity of the fire, says Rowsell.
Aside from one minor flare-up, the fire is now out and the scene has been handed over to the RCMP and Fire and Emergency Services for investigation.
