An advocate for victims of abuse is releasing a book detailing his story.
Jack Whelan suffered physical and mental abuse at the Whitbourne Boys Home in the mid 1970s, including long periods of isolation.
Last year he built a replica of the cell he had to stay in and advocated for changes to the Limitations Act, which were introduced in the provincial legislature earlier this year.
Now, Whalen has teamed up with Newfoundland writer Lisa Moore to tell his story in the book ‘Invisible Prisons.’
Whalen says it was important to write his story down because he wasn’t the first, or the last, child who had this happen to them. He says the more attention he can bring to it, the better.
A book launch is happening tonight. Whalen, who is receiving cancer treatment in Ontario, has flown home for the event.
He and Moore will be in attendance for the event. It is taking place from 7 to 9:30 at the Royal Canadian Legion by Quidi Vidi Lake.
