Municipalities across the province have been picking up on the need for radon testing and the capital city is expected to follow suit.
In recent weeks the town of CBS and the city of Mount Pearl have launched radon testing awareness campaigns with a limited number of free test kits available to residents.
Radon, a colourless, odourless gas that is found naturally in soil and rock, has been cited as the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen says the city is considering a similar awareness and testing program.
He says the city of Mount Pearl offered 400 test kits, but in the capital city there are five wards, and figuring out how to distribute kits and the cost is something that takes time.
