The worst of heavy rainfall appears to be over for the Avalon Peninsula, but many other areas will continue to see torrential rain and even thunder and lighting as a water-soaked system continues to make its way across the island.
Environment Canada meteorologist Ian Hubbard says heavy rain is still falling over central and western portions of the island.
Rainfall amounts have been very high in some areas.
The highest amounts recorded as of late Friday afternoon include about 90 mm on parts of the island’s south coast and about 40 to 50 mm on the Avalon Peninsula. “It’s still coming down pretty good…over the Burin right now” says Hubbard, “with some thundershowers.” While many areas will continue to see rain into the overnight hours, the Avalon “won’t see nearly as much for the rest of this event.”)
Hubbard calls the low pressure weather system a complex one with plenty of tropical moisture in the mix.
He says the system “actually absorbed some of the remnants of Post-tropical storm Oscar, so that means it has some tropical moisture in it, so any time that happens you tend to get heavy downpours, and a lot of rain in a short period and that’s exactly what we saw.”
