A man from Conception Bay South has been awarded the Governor General’s Medal of Bravery for a daring rescue in Point Verde nearly three years ago.
David Coffey sprung into action on November 25, 2021 when he spotted a passenger inside of a sinking truck in Point Verde Pond.
According to the Governor General’s Office, after calling 911 Coffey got some rope from another driver and swam out to the truck.
Coffey couldn’t get the door open and had to pull the passenger out through the window.
He then used a life-saving ring to pull the victim safely to shore.
Last week, Coffey was given the Medal of Bravery in Ottawa for his actions that day.
Premier Andrew Furey thanks the man for his “selfless and brave” act, noting that “this is what heroism looks like.”
