It’s now official: a Regatta tradition will be upended next year to accommodate the 2025 Canada Summer Games.
The original ask to change the date came before council earlier this year but Mayor Danny Breen says something went awry.
“I thought we did this before but apparently we never passed the motion. I feel like … Yogi Bera said, ‘it’s deja vu all over again.'”
The issue was rectified yesterday, with the date approved for July 30th – the last Wednesday in that month instead of the first one in August.
It’s not the first or second time the Regatta has been scheduled a week earlier than is tradition.
It happened in the back-to-back years of 1977 – for the city’s other Canada Summer Games – and 1978 to coincide with the visit of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
