The MHA for Exploits met yesterday with a group who were staying at the Driftwood Inn in Deer Lake nearly two weeks ago when the hotel caught fire.
Pleaman Forsey met with the parents of some of the young volleyball players from Bishop’s Falls who were in Deer Lake on the weekend of October 19 for a school tournament.
Guests were roused from their beds around 7:00 in the morning when the fire broke out, many fleeing with just the clothes on their backs.
He says the families are still shaken by what they experienced and they have many questions about safety protocols that were in place at the hotel.
Forsey can’t speak to the specifics as the investigation continues to unfold, but says the parents are anxious for answers.
“When it’s all said and done,” says Forsey, “they hope that there will be more precautions put in place so that maybe these things won’t happen again.”
Forsey says questions also remain about compensation since many guests left personal belongings behind including phones and Chromebooks.
