The local Tent City for Change movement has a demonstration planned for this afternoon at the Colonial Building in St. John’s.
It’s been one year since tents started being erected on the grounds of the Colonial Building in St. John’s, and advocates say the government has shown them nothing but “inaction, apathy and derision.”
The provincial government’s response was to establish transitional housing in the old Airport Comfort Inn in St. John’s with wraparound health, mental health, and addiction support. But, that process has taken longer than some would have liked to see.
Tent City for Change estimates some 50 people are sleeping rough in St. John’s every night.
They’re seeking change and their first collective demand is to end no-fault evections in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Today’s demonstration is set for 2:00 p.m.
