The inshore sector would prefer to see the offshore boats go elsewhere, but the Atlantic Groundfish Council says the FFAW is spreading misinformation.
The stock assessment for the south coast cod stock (3PS) was released yesterday, but it’s still in the critical zone and is, therefore, unable to sustain much in the way of harvesting pressure.
The union, which represents the smaller boats, says draggers should not be allowed in until the stock recovers, but OCI, which is part of the Atlantic Groundfish Council, disagrees.
Its allocation is only 12 per cent of the quota, about 160 tonnes. However, company spokesman Carey Bonnell says that helps sustain jobs at Icewater in Arnold’s Cove and another 30-35 on the trawler.
