A group of Memorial University researchers have been awarded $1.8 million through a consortium funded by Ottawa to help safeguard against cyberpiracy and cyberattacks in the marine industry.
Dr. Jonathan Anderson with MUN’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is joining with a team from the Marine Institute on two marine cybersecurity projects.
He says the first involves the development of training material for those working in the marine industry.
“That includes seafarers, so there’ll be very intensive training exercises that involve full motion bridge simulators and all kinds of technology to really make that training very real,” he said.
Other training will include shoreside personnel.
“People who are making decisions about how to interface with regulators, so that people can really understand both the consequences of these potential attacks, and things they can do to defend against them.”
The other project, says Anderson, is focused on improving the resiliency, reliability and security of the “critical systems” that marine infrastructure is built on.
