The housing critic is questioning the cost-efficiency of leasing the old Airport Comfort Inn (Horizons at 106) as transitional housing.
Joedy Wall says the former hotel is being leased, in addition to wrap-around supports and security, at a cost to the government of $13 million per year over a three-year contract, with 56 of the 100 rooms now occupied.
Wall says that equates to $240,000 per person per year.
He acknowledges that while the services and housing are needed, he questions whether they’re being delivered efficiently.
He says that, as a former municipal leader, his council had the responsibility to run the town of Pouch Cove efficiently and within their budget.
“My caucus colleagues and I are concerned about the spending, the high amounts of spending, and right now, this $39 million deal at $240,000 per person, and only 56 of 100 rooms being filled after almost a year? Yes, that’s why I ask questions, and that’s why we are concerned.”
