Some 55-thousand Canada Post workers continue their strike and the halt on mail service in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Workers rallied outside the Canada Post office on Water Street in St. John’s this afternoon alongside federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.
Concerns among employees include pay and benefits.
Local union rep Craig Dwyer says the strike could have been avoided had the federal government been more willing at the table.
“This could have been resolved in April of last year, it could have been resolved in July, but the corporation is not negotiating in good faith. They’re not listening to our negotiators’ ideas. We’ve come to the table with satisfying their demands and generating revenue and making it better for our members, and they’re just saying no,” he told VOCM.
Kelly Shute, a postal worker in the province, says his wages aren’t keeping up and he’s finding it harder to make ends meet.
“We’re now at or below the living wage for half the employees in the plant. Where’s that going to be five years from now?” Kelly said.
