Health Minister John Hogan says he supports the decision-making process of Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services after learning that no disciplinary action has been taken against the managers involved in a conflict of interest violation.
Hogan says while it may not have been disciplinary, NLHS has taken steps to educate employees about what conflict of interest is an how to avoid. He has also written the Health Authority regarding the importance of clarifying the history of the situation to the public, what was looked at in the investigation and how the conclusions were reached.
Opposition Health Critic Barry Petten meanwhile believes a separate, independent investigation into the situation is needed.
Petten argues that the findings of the NLHS probe are the results of the Health Authority investigating itself.
He says a “proper investigation” needs to take place, and he wonders if it is something that the police should be looking into.
When pressed further on whether he is calling on government to bring in the police to investigate, Petten wouldn’t directly make that call.
“Government needs to do the right thing,” asserts Petten. He accuses government of withholding information on the issue, and is calling for it all to be laid out.
