Hockey NL is acknowledging the concerns recently raised by the Deer Lake Red Wings, which ran into an unexpected snag in its attempts to sign former Growlers James Melindy and Jordan Escott.
The Red Wings signed the players but were surprised when Hockey NL blocked the move by making a change in player eligibility and setting boundaries for ex-pats and where they can play.
Hockey NL says the Red Wings received approval under former rules, but the policy was reviewed, and the governing body implemented revisions to support what they call “fair, competitive balance within each league.”
Hockey NL revised its Residence Regulation 203, which includes an appeal process for players with unique circumstances. It acknowledges Deer Lake’s concerns regarding the impact on their team structure and competitive prospects. It says it remains committed to fostering an environment of fairness and community-driven hockey where regional hockey is celebrated.
