Heavy rainfall made this morning’s commute in the metro region a tricky affair, and there’s no immediate end in sight.
A rainfall warning is in effect for the northern portion of the Avalon, eastern areas of the island, the Great Northern Peninsula and southeastern Labrador.
The Avalon can expect totals of 50-60 mm of precipitation today and tonight in waves of heavy rain. Environment Canada meteorologist Wanda Batten says while the rain will taper off in the St. John’s area by tomorrow morning, it will persist for several days in other areas of the province.
That doesn’t mean the Avalon is in the clear however.
“Rain is expected to move back in again Thursday night, so we’re not going to see a break anytime soon. It’s a long, low, slow burn,” says Batten of the stubborn weather pattern that’s taken hold. “A lot of rain is expected, but it’s over a very long period of time.” Up to 5mm an hour can be expected in the heavier bands.
