The province is adding two new PET-CT scanners to hospitals across the province – one at the Health Sciences and another at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook.
The government says the decision is based on a Health Accord recommendation aimed at improving mortality rates for cancer, cardiac disease, and stroke patients.
The province says the new scanners are in addition to one used in the Health Sciences.
They note that PET-CTs can often detect diseases, like cancer, faster than CT scans and MRIs.
There is currently $2-million being held in trust for the purchase of a PET-CT for the western zone.
