An MP from this province is defending her government’s move to exclude people who did not work last year from eligibility for the $250 cheques going out in April.
The one-time $250 payments will be the final phase of measures announced last week to help people make ends meet. The 15 per cent HST will be removed from numerous items from December 14 to February 15.
However, only people who worked last year and earned under $150,000 will qualify for the $250 cheques. That eliminates some, including people who are retired or are on income support.
Cabinet minister Gudie Hutchings, whose riding is the west coast, says this measure is designed to help those who have earned money working. She says there are other measures for seniors and others.
“We have just under 20,000 Newfoundlanders an Labradorians who are receiving dental care, and we are close to Pharmacare. Look at the diabetes medication which is so costly and is now being covered. And, of course, seniors will be able to avail of the tax breaks as well.”
