The Co-Chair of the Canada Games Society says despite a wet fall construction season, Canada Summer Games facilities will be ready on time.
Crews have been out despite the rain, working to get the facilities built and ready for an influx of athletes and officials in August.
The Aquarena and Green Belt Tennis Complex are undergoing major renovations, and a new soccer field and track is being built.
Kim Keating says residents will notice the difference as the event draws nearer.
“Contractors are very committed to having all of the facilities ready for the games, of which many are right now. The Fortis Games Complex is well on schedule, and you can see the great progress that’s being made,” she said.
Access to sports venues and MUN residence on-campus is being provided in-kind, which the university says is usually the case when a university partners with the Canada Games as a host for athletes.
In exchange, says Memorial, the university will receive greater exposure through the Canada Games and top level infrastructure that will last for decades.
That includes the $25 million in upgrades to the Aqurena as well as other campus improvement projects like the new accessible ramp at Gushue Hall and accessible bathrooms.
The university has also adjusted its spring semester end-date and fall semester start-date to reduce the potential impact on students leaving, or moving into, residence.
