WARNING: The details of this story are disturbing.
The Crown is seeking up to 14 years in prison for a Pouch Cove man convicted of sexually assaulting two girls.
Former downtown musician and bar owner Chris Carter, 38, was convicted in September of sexual assault, sexual interference and exploitation, and invitation to sexual touching — essentially using and sexually abusing the girls from 2018 to 2021.
It included everything from touching to forced oral sex and intercourse dozens of times when the girls were between 12 and 15 years old.
If they refused, Carter punished them—taking away their cellphones, cutting off Wi-Fi access, and even denying food until they gave in. And when police got involved, he threatened the girls, demanded they deny everything.
Supreme Court Justice Vikas Khaladkar listened intently yesterday as prosecutor Ashley Targett and defence lawyer Iain Hollett tried to sway him on sentence.
The judge has already concluded that Carter—who watched yesterday on video from jail in Bishop’s Falls—is a “conniving, self-serving person who can’t be trusted.”
The Crown is seeking 12-14 years behind bars while the defence countered with six-to-eight years.
Justice Khaladkar will render his decision six days before Christmas, on December 19.
