There’s been yet another delay in the trial for a St. John’s fire captain accused of sex offences against a minor.
Fifty-three-year-old Ron Pomeroy was charged this time last year with sexual assault and sexual exploitation involving a teenage girl.
The offences are alleged to have occurred between February and May of 2023.
The three-day trial was set to start this past June, but was put off when the Crown asked for more time to review new evidence from police.
The trial was rescheduled for February, but that was postponed after Pomeroy’s lawyer declared a personal conflict with his client.
Pomeroy retained a new lawyer who was given time to get up to speed on the case, with new trial dates set for April of next year.
But in provincial court this morning, that was pushed back to late May, at the request of the Crown.
That will still be preceded by a defence application seeking access to the alleged victim’s private and confidential records.
The girl’s family has previously expressed frustration with the delays.
Pomeroy is a 32-year veteran of the fire department, and was a captain when the charges were laid last December.
His current employment status remains unclear, but he remains free on conditions pending the outcome of the case.
