The Canadian Coast Guard says it is aware of an ongoing issue in Springdale concerning the old ferry Captain Earle W Winsor now in the possession of a private owner.
The eyesore has been listing in the water near Springdale for years. Things came to a head back in January when the Coast Guard got involved.
The former ferry was stabilized last winter and booms were put in place to prevent any pollutants from potentially escaping into the environment.
Now the Coast Guard is back on site in Springdale with crews conducting an updated assessment on the vessel.
They’re gathering more up-to-date information to confirm whether the vessel poses, or may pose, a hazard to the marine environment, public health or the local economy.
It’s hoped their assessment will help to determine what steps can be made to mitigate the threat the vessel may pose in terms of pollution, damage and hazards.
The Canadian Coast Guard says it will maintain overall command of the response to the incident and ensure that an appropriate response is implemented.
